Overview
Dan has completed several competitive seasons since joining the league all in relative obscurity. Who is Dan? Hopes to move into the spotlight, vying for his first championship.
What Went Right?
Barry Bonds OBP is fierce. That stat alone makes him worth a fourth round pick so long as he avoids being indicted. An offensive heavy squad has been a consistent recipe for fantasy success. Durham a good pick, but like Lofton, Dan will hate seeing him on the roster every day.
What Went Wrong?
It is said of Chipper by a fellow manager who does not wish to remain anonymous, Bill Mauger, "At this rate Chipper will be a first rounder again by next year". An accurate statement. With declining power numbers, he falsely continues to climb in the draft. Dan was hurt by the Red Sox bullshit with Pineiro. There is also no room for Lopez in the lineup.
Offense
Offense was the focus of the draft. Dan is the preseason favorite to score a seventeen in the OBP category. Speed is not a concern either with three 25 plus stolen base guys, once room is made for Lopez. Most of the power will come from Hafner, but Dan has eight other players capable of hitting twenty to thirty bombs. With the primary focus of the draft on offense, what would the effect on pitching be?
Pitching
Aging Smoltz is still a top ten fantasy pitcher. Glavine's slow decline continues but he remains effective. Orlando Hernandez remains mostly hype; now age forty something he continues to pile up strikeouts. Oliver Perez lacks control, only seeming to record outs when he strikes them out. HE is still learning to pitch. Nathan may be the best closer in fantasy baseball. If Rodney and Gonzalez are able to get a closing gig and hang on to it, the staff would be rounded out nicely, bumping him to the middle of the pack. Consistently this team will hurt for wins, saves, era and whip.
Overall
The offensive juggernaut will only carry him so far. With the discovery of additional pitcher, Dan could land with a top five finish.
